Wall-E is upon us.

By now most of us have seen the movie Wall-E.  Remember how the humans looked in that movie?  Overweight and unmotivated.  I bet most people thought that, we, as a society would never really get like that, right?  Think again.  We are moving in that direction at a rapid pace and every year its gets worse and worse.

  • Currently 300,000 adults die each year because of unhealthy dietary habits and little to no physical activity.
  • Nearly two-thirds of US Adults are overweight (with a BMI > 25)
  • Nearly one-third of US Adults are obese (BMI > 30)
  • A little over 15% of our kids are considered overweight.
  • Diabetes cases are sky rocketing.  An estimated 70% of diabetic cases can be attributed to excessive weight.

All hope is not lost. We as Americans are trying to lose weight. We spend, on average, 33 billion annually on weight loss products and services. But then we turn around and spend 110 billion on fast food. Makes sense doesn’t it?

We all know losing weight is not easy.  I know this first hand myself. I have battled my weight ever since I was a kid. Right now I happen to be in good shape but it always hasn’t been that way. It has taken me over 3 years to get to this point.  When I started my new job, I was tipping the scales at 230. I am now 176 and holding.  I am putting this out there because I want people to know that I understand the struggles that one goes through trying to develop that healthy lifestyle. I am not some guy trying to give advice but not knowing the struggles of the overweight mind.  Midnight candy bar binges? Been there, done that. But I also know the benefits of breaking that vicious cycle and the rewards that can be reaped from it. I believe very strongly in a healthy lifestyle and its my hope that my life and my stories can help others with their struggles.

Good post Tyson. We have an uphill battle, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight it. Exhibit A: The 4,800 calorie burger.

I’m astounded by how wasteful this is, but it is evidence of the attitude we need to overcome. Food is fuel, not entertainment. The people who eat stuff like this are headed for a pine box in short order. I’m not sure whether we will be able to help them in large numbers, but I honestly believe we can help their kids avoid being obese. The next generation simply has to be more conscious of proper nutrition and the importance of exercise.

Thanks for continuing to do your part.
