Pepsi Throwback Review

Pepsi Review

You may be asking yourself why I am reviewing a soda. After all soda isn’t even remotely healthy. Truth is, even though I am not much of a soda drinker anymore there was something about this new “throwback” soda that really had me intrigued. The fact that is used normal sugar in place of the high fructose corn syrup had me wondering about the taste. Would it taste better, worse, the same? How much did HFCS really affect the taste? Was the use of HFCS simply based on cost or did it really add some flavor to the soda?

The first thing I noticed when I opened the bottle was that there was less fizz than normal. My wife experienced the same thing when she opened her bottle.  My first taste impression was good. I thought the taste was quite similar to normal Pepsi. However the taste reminded my wife of a soda that had gone flat. After a few minutes of drinking and half the bottle gone, I noticed a bit of an aftertaste in my mouth. Nothing overwhelming but it was there. I also noticed a feeling of fullness from drinking it. Something not often experienced when drinking regular HFCS syrup laden soda.

Overall I thought the Pepsi was quite good. Not good enough to make me start drinking soda again, good, but good nonetheless. Even though there is real sugar in this soda, its still 67.5 grams and that is way to much sugar to consume in one sitting, especially from a drink.

So in closing, if you are a soda drinker, give this a shot and let me know your thoughts on it.

Alli and I tried the Throwback Mountain Dew and Heritage Dr. Pepper tonight. Our experience with them was completely different. I can understand the fizz part, but I didn’t find any sort of aftertaste in the Mountain Dew. Alli said the same thing about the Dr. Pepper. Wonder if you guys got a bad batch.

To me, the flavor is very close to the original, but without that oversweet HFCS taste.

I am trying to drink less soda, but this is a nice option for people that don’t want the crazy sweeteners.

The after taste could be from the nearly 5 tablespoons of sugar that I just consumed or from the fact that I have not had a Pepsi in months. I had to go to two different places just to find the Pepsi. I would have rather had the Mt Dew.

I found it at the QuikTrip on 169 by our house. Bought a 12-pack of each that we tried. I enjoyed it.

WOW, that’s a lot of sugar. Are they running out of HFCS or something? Such a curious time of year to release this product.

I am not really sure why the decided to do real sugar. I wonder if its because of all the negative press that HFCS has been getting lately. I dont see them continuing with real sugar when you think about how much more expensive it is compared to HFCS.
