Dreadmill No More!

Prior to joining the YMCA, I was a cardio machine junky. Except for the weekly plyometrics session, I could always be found on the tread climber, treadmill, elliptical,  any other form of crappy cardio machine. But there was a problem: I hate cardio machines. Always have. The concept of moving your legs but never going anywhere never appealed to me. If it wasn’t for the TV’s mounted everywhere, I may have fallen asleep from boredom.

Ever since joining the YMCA, I have not done any cardio on the machines. Now I hit the basketball court for some aggressive shooting, sprints, plyometrics, jump rope, whatver. During the summer I plan on hitting the outdoor pool. This is what cardio should be about. Real life moves in a real life environment. Not sliding my feet back and forth. Not only am I getting a better workout but I no longer hate the thought of cardio days. I mean, who thought it would be a great idea to line up 30 treadmills in a row all facing the same direction?  Why did no one think how awesome it would be if that area was just open and people could have fun? Tag anyone? Now that would be a workout!

My old gym had a basketball court right next to the area where the weights were located. I used to do a UCML (upper, cardio, middle, lower) and go run suicides on the court for the cardio. People thought I was crazy, but it was a great workout. And to think, I hated suicides in high school.

That’s funny. I often think about what I hated to do in high school that I now find myself doing on a daily basis. I look back and think to myself, had I known then what I know now, I would have been unstoppable in sports! Life is always a lesson.
