P90x Primal Style – Week 6

I am quite proud of myself for last week. I managed to do all of the workouts except for Saturday’s cardio session. My diet was good but not great and I even managed to get through the weekend without much damage.  I did a 30 hour fast midweek and that really helped to fuel my metabolism. My body fat is down but not in single digits yet. I will say that the program is starting to wear on me a bit.  I prefer not being trapping into set workouts that I know will require me to workout for so many minutes before I am done. I usually like to take cues from my own body on when I have had enough. I am starting to find myself just going through the movements and probably not getting everything out of it as I should. I am looking forward to recovery week just for a break. I hope to finish strong on phase 3.

Judging from the scale and my body fat analyzer it appears that I have entered into a bit of a maintenance mode. My weight fluctuates very little and my body fat really hasn’t budged in the last several weeks. I somehow need to step up my game but I am not really sure how to do that right now. Especially when you consider I am just going through the movements as it seems.

Any suggestions out there on how I can get over this hurdle?

To be honest, in my opinion you already look pretty lean and 10.9% means you have a good amount of lean body mass. If you are starting to feel less interested or “off” in your workouts, be careful that you aren’t going past the line into over-training. Increased cortisol levels can make losing fat more difficult.

I think you are right. Even if my training isn’t excessive by other standards, if I am not feeling it, I am more likely to get injured or at the least, not get the full benefits out of it. My biggest decision now is whether nor not I continue to complete the last 5 weeks of P90x or start doing something else.

Have you tried (do you have time for) a second cardio workout? Basically, have you thought about doing the doubles variant of P90X? It seems like weekends are where you aren’t as disciplined, perhaps changing that would give you a little extra push.

You use the fat analyzer on your scale to test your body fat percentage, correct? Perhaps doing a manual measurement/calculation of your body fat will show you a different result.

It’s funny you should ask that. I actually tried to do double last week but I only managed to pull out one day before I lost the motivation to get up at 5am and go running. My biggest problem on the weekends is a complete lack of time and not so much motivation. I am going to try and push myself this coming weekend to get out and do something. Maybe take the kids to the park and do some pull ups on the monkey bars.

I have a hand held fat analyzer. I try and measure both my weight and fat at the same time and under the same conditions. I could try the pincher method as well. Might be interesting to see what my result would be that way. Maybe the news would be better!

I have been doing P90x in some fashion for the last few years. Even when not doing the program I am following a lot of the exercises. I think I just need a break. Question is, do I push myself to finish the next 5 weeks?

With time being an issue it sounds like doubles isn’t the answer. I wonder if just messing around (bike rides, hikes, playing with the kids, soccer, whatever) on the weekends and being more strict with food would give you the slight edge or adjustment you’re looking for.

Motivation on the weekend is a hard thing for me as well. It gets to the point were I just need to talk myself into it. I always feel better afterwards. Maybe talking yourself up or your kids talking you up would help with weekends as well. Ask your kids to motivate you and offer up some type of reward if they do. ;)

If you’re not loving the workout it’s not a good idea to push through it. Best bet would be to find something else to do entirely. Take a break from P90X and maybe do crossfit or take a boxing class. :)

My kids do love to go to the park. I just need this rain to stop so we can actually make it out there again. Before I started this last round of P90x, I was just working out freely and doing my own thing. I would skip workouts here and there, swim, play basketball, lift whatever I felt like. I wasn’t losing but I wasn’t gaining either. More importantly I felt great. My entire life I have felt that if I wasn’t losing weight, then I wasn’t doing something right. I think I need to get back into the mindset of maintaining is good. Hmm, this sounds like it might make for a good blog post today. :)

Dude, you look good already. Maybe bulk or eat at maintenance for a while, and then cut again.

Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated. My end goal in all of this was to achieve 6 pack abs. Something that has eluded me for my entire life. I think was is most frustrating for me is to be so close but feel so far away. I know that I am only a few body fat percentages away from it but I cant get over that hurdle. I think I may just need to take a break for a week and then regroup and see what happens.
