Foot Ache?

Foot Here is a question for all the Vibram wearers and barefoot runners out there. I have been wearing my Vibram’s during all forms of working out except for basketball (which I only play one night a week). In the last month I have noticed something quite peculiar with my left foot.  During times of intense running or jumping, my left foot pretty much locks up and I have no movement. This causes me to usually stumble, grumble, and limp for a few minutes (I couldn’t think of anymore rhythms). Then as fast as it appears, it disappears just as quick and all is good and I can go back to what I am doing. During normal walking or just lounging around I feel no discomfort what-so-ever.

To describe it as best as I can would be to say that my foot appears to not want to flex up at all. Has anyone else experience this with Vibrams or barefoot running or is my issue something greater than what is on my feet?  What can I do to remedy this problem? It’s getting to be pretty annoying.

Please help!

Hey Tyson, I’ve had quite a bit of experience with various pains and injuries while trying to transition to minimalist footwear, specifically Vibram Five Fingers and running barefoot. How long has it been since you first start training in VFF’s? Do you ever run barefoot or train barefoot?

Consider checking out the following posts – I have pictures pointing out the locations of the pain, and probable causes:

Is there a sharp pain? Or is more a lack of mobility? Remember, the tendons and muscles need a while to adapt, since they are severely underdeveloped from a lifetime of wearing shoes.

Hey David, Thanks for your comment. I have been wearing the Vibrams since March and with the exception of Basketball, wear them for all of my training. The pain that I am experiencing now has only been going on for about a month now. I am not experiencing any swelling. The pain appears to be coming from the bones in my foot rather than a particular muscle group. I even felt it a bit today while swimming at the pool. It’s like I have no flex to my foot.

To answer your question about a sharp pain or lack of mobility. I don’t really feel anything until I come down on it while jumping or running. Then I limp for about 30 seconds and its good again.

I am thinking of visiting a chiropractor to have it looked at. I can rotate my ankle around and hear and feel a pop. That cant be good.

Tyson, I would recommend getting an x-ray just to be safe. You don’t want to end up with a stress fracture because that would put you out of action for a couple of months for sure.

An x-ray is not a bad idea. I might need to look into that. I am going to go running this weekend. We shall see how it plays out.
