Carb Hangover

Carb hangover

Most Saturdays (weekends) I do a carb refeed. I do this in order to increase my leptin levels and to speed up my metabolism which has slowed down over the course of the week from my low  carb  primal diet.  Let’s be honest,  I really enjoy the refeeds. It gives me a chance to eat some of the things that I sort of miss. For example, yesterday started out with waffles with my wife. It then moved onto hot dogs and cake at a friend’s son’s birthday party. Then my wife and I went out for Mexican food. I completed the day with a grilled turkey and cheese sandwich and various forms of chips, popcorn, and cereals. Go big or go home is what I say!

The biggest downside of refeeds days is the carb hangover I feel the next morning. I am feeling it today. Swollen eyes, fatigue, nausea, headache, etc. The list goes on and on. I am not really sure what causes these hangover symptoms but its obviously from the increase in carb intake from what the body is used to.

My advice to anyone that is going low carb and has yet to give themselves a “free” day to indulge, beware of the dreaded carb hangover!

Now I am off to do some sprints. I am hoping that a good sweat will get this body back to feeling itself again.

You might want to try having a day with healthy sources of carbs. If you’re sensitive at all to gluten, then eating a lot of it for one day a week would certainly leave you feeling terrible the next day. Try a high carb day with potato, sweet potato, carrots, beets, fruit, etc. and leave out the grains. At the very least leave out the wheat and junk food.

I am sensitive to gluten so that could have been the cause of my illness today. Yesterday probably should have been classified as a free cheat day rather than a refeed day. It was nice to do though. I sweat most of it out this morning while doing some sprints at the park.

I’ve read that beer can have a pretty high glycemic response. I think it must be true as I can’t drink much beer at all anymore, not even the gluten-free varieties. I just feel awful later, but not in an alcohol hangover kind of way.

What about other types of alcohol? Do you experience the same effects? Having a gluten sensitivity, I used to drink hard apple cider and didnt feel that bad the next day. Same with wine. I always feel really bloated after a day of not so good eating habits.

Whenever I overindulge I always regret it the next day. I think keeping the days we indulge also IF (maybe even just one HUGE carby meal w/ dessert) would mitigate the next day hangover. Will try this and let you know how it goes. Great blog :)

It’s funny because after I overindulge, I immediately regret it and get really down on myself. I probably make myself feel more worse than the actual food I ate. :)

This post is one of the top Google results for “carb hangover”. And wouldn’t you know it, a bunch of my paleo homies.

I’ve been doing a weekly carb refeed as well — usually in connection with an increase in endurance work on my lifting off-day. Just a couple notes in response to the other comments… I get this hangover effect even with zero alcohol and zero non-paleo carbs. My carb source is almost completely sweet potato (garnet yam). Sometimes I throw in a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup, but removing those variables doesn’t alter the effect.

I’d happily blame it on the endurance training, but this also happens on complete training off-days when I carb refeed.

Wow! Number 2 in Google for “carb hangover” Who knew!?

My guess is you probably aren’t counting your macro-nutrients but would you have a rough idea of how many grams of carbs you are taking in on your refeed days? My hangover days usually follow a refeed day of 400+ grams/carbs and usually only when a non-paleo food has been eaten.

Yesterday I finished the day off with 230grams/carbs and all from paleo approved sources and I feel no ill effect today.

My guess is its the amount of carbs consumed more than the type.

I have the same problem. I almost think I should drink a bunch on my free day to deserve how crappy I feel the next.

I agree. It would definitely make it more fun wouldn’t it.
