Just yesterday I was sitting on the bike at the gym when I shiny blue box caught my attention. I looked once, then twice, and then finally turned completely around to see what it was. Were my eyes playing tricks on me or was there really a soda machine sitting right next to the water fountain? I had to go over and take a look. It was in fact a Pepsi machine although it contained no soda. However, its selection wasn’t much better.

Here is what it had:

Water

Propel

2 types of Power-Aid

AMP

2 types of Dole Juice

Not exactly a great choice for a pre or post workout drink. I would have loved to see some protein shakes in there but I guess there wasn’t any room left. I would also expect someplace like the gym to promote healthy choices. It appears that profit was the main motivational factor here. Wouldn’t you agree?

I have serious issues with this article – Congress set to expand home buyer tax credit. First off, where is the government going to get all this new money to fund these loans? From the tax payers that’s where. Have we not shelled out enough money in an attempt to get the economy to turn around? Enough is enough. Stop creating new incentives for people to get into debt again. I am so tired of the government telling people to go out and buy stuff on credit. This is why the economy tanked in the first place. People were pushed to buy property they couldn’t afford and told they could. Now I feel the government is doing it again. Have you been in a house for over 5 years? Well the government things its about time you upgraded that home to something bigger and better. Your payments are affordable? That shouldn’t bother you, after all the government is going to give you a $6500 dollar tax credit to offset that. Heck, why don’t you go and buy a new TV and couch to put in that new big house. After all, the government restricted the credit cards so they can no longer fault you for being late on that massive debt that you are set to start accumulating. After all, its not your fault you cant afford that new payment. The government said it was OK to put stuff on credit. Besides, the fate of this economy rests on your ability to start charging stuff. Christmas is right around the corner and if we don’t beat last years earnings, then who knows what will happen to the market. You don’t want that on your conscience do you?

People need to learn to save up their money and pay for things with cash. If your house is adequate for your needs then why do you need to upgrade? If your current TV still works and your couch doesn’t have a spring popping through, keep them. If you have the money, then buy all means, spend it if you want. If you don’t, please do not put it on a credit card to pay later.

This is exactly what is wrong with today’s fast food corporations! Do we really need a 1200 calorie chicken sandwich? Why not make a chicken sandwich that has 2 100% whole wheat buns, grilled chicken breast, fresh organic vegetables, and no sauce? Now that is the kind of sandwich I would want to eat.

KFC’s newest “sandwich” is a heart-stopping creation that seems literally to die for: it layers two kinds of cheese with bacon and oozes “Colonel’s sauce.” The twist? Instead of bread, two deep-fried chicken breasts round out the calorific concoction.

**Updated 10-16-09**

KFC contacted me regarding my post. They are claiming that the information potrayed on the web is inaccurate and they want to set the record straight. Although I still disagree with this sandwich in general and hope that it never makes it to the mass market, Iwill post their updated calorie information in hopes that is helps to educate the public better.

The Double Down is not an item available for sale at KFC restaurants across the country. The Double Down is a test market item that is available for only a brief time and in only two markets: Providence, R.I., and Omaha, Neb. It includes two Original Recipe filets, bacon, Swiss and Pepper Jack cheeses and Colonel’s sauce.

There have been numerous incorrect reports in the media regarding the calories in a Double Down. While we wouldn’t run final numbers on a product unless it is rolled out nationally, we estimate the Double Down at about 590 calories. (FYI, one of the stories that had incorrect nutritional information was the Huffington Post. They cited an erroneous report from the Vancouver Sun, which estimated the sandwich at more than 1,200 calories. We contacted Huffington Post, and they corrected their story, as did the Sun.) If the decision is made to roll the product nationally and that final number ends up varying from our estimate of 590, it won’t be by much.

It is likely you are using the 1200 number from one of the many media sources that published incorrect information. (For instance, when the Vancouver Sun estimated their nutritionals for the sandwich, they added together the total calories for two full-size, bone-in Original Recipe breasts. The actual breast filet used for the Double Down is much smaller — and the nutritionals are much different — than a full-size Original Recipe chicken breast.)

If you have done your own nutritional analysis of the sandwich and come up with an incorrect number, please share the details with us so we can contact the lab you worked with.

Here are our estimated nutritionals for the Double Down:

Calories: 590
Calories from fat: 280
Total fat: 31g
Saturated fat: 10g
Trans fat: 0g
Cholesterol: 190mg

While the Double Down was a test market-only item, the bigger (and national) product news on the KFC front is our introduction of Kentucky Grilled Chicken, which has been the biggest product launch in our history and offers a great alternative for those who are watching calories without sacrificing taste. You can enjoy a two-piece Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal with corn and green beans for around 400 calories.

http://www.kfc.com/nutrition/grilled.asp

If you have any questions, please let us know. If your decision is to leave the inaccurate information on your web site, please confirm that via e-mail, as we’ll need to share that information with our Legal team.

Thanks for your time.

Where I work we have a public forum where people can ask questions about any topic they want and usually they will get a response. Today someone asked if they needed to get a cable box for every one of their 8 TV’s while using AT&T’s Uverse. 8 TV’s! I was floored. What made it worse was that there were 4 immediate responses back from people claiming to have 7 TV’s, recording 4 shows at once, etc, etc. I post health questions out there and I don’t here anything back for weeks, if ever!

I know in our society TV reigns but I think 8 TV’s is a bit excessive. We have 3 in our house and one never gets turned on, one gets turned on in the morning for news, weather, and traffic and the other gets turned for maybe a few hours a week. I honestly cant remember the last time I sat down to watch a television show. I think it was the season finale of “So You Think You Can Dance” (which I consider a great show that really shows the fitness level needed to be a dancer, BTW)

In a world where obesity numbers are increasing expotentially, do we really need a service that allows you to record 4 shows at once? Who has the time to sit down and watch 4 shows? One of the biggest excuses I hear for not working out is a lack of time. If you have time to watch 4 shows, you have time to do a 20 minute workout. It just comes down to what you feel is more important I guess.

Any other thoughts on this?

Two posts in one day! Its a new record!!

I don’t complain too often about the people at my gym. I know everyone is different. We all have different lift techniques, styles of clothing, hygiene preferences, etc. One thing that upsets me is when people hog the weights. This is what happened to me today. I was trying to do P90x Shoulders and Arms, I just got done with Side Tri-Rises and went to grab some weight to do my In & Out Straight Arm Shoulder Flys. Imagine my surprise when I found out that all the weights from 5 pounds all the way up to 20 pounds were being used…by the same two guys!! This is quite the feat considering that every weight increment has 2 sets and they go up by 2.5 pounds. These guys were doing some sort of circuit with dumbbells and had all the dumbbells surrounding their bench, along with both of their gym bags (apparently the locker room is not to their liking). They both had to do the workout at the same time so using both sets of weight was a must. So I proceeded to do the only thing that I could and grabbed a set of 20lbs dumbbells for my two angle shoulder fly’s. I guess I should have thanked them for pushing me to do more weight than I probably would have. Thanks guys!
