Ear Candling does Work! PDF Print E-mail

Excerpt from www.familyhealthguide.co.uk

Ear Candling or Ear Coning

A long hollow tapering cone of muslin coated with wax is inserted into the ear and lit to create a vacuum.

Its advocates claimed it treated hearing problems, headaches, migraine, sinusitis, rhinitis, and hay fever. Apparently the candle acts on the 'energetic level' and can also detoxify you and treat all sorts of ailments unconnected with your ear.

  • FACT: There have been reports of external burns, ear canal obstruction with candle wax and of perforated ear drums. No ear wax is removed by the procedure. A study published in the journal Laryngoscope found no proof that ear candles produce a vacuum or result in the removal of earwax.

  • Michael Godin, an ear, nose and throat doctor at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary adamantly opposes ear candling. “It’s a gimmick,” he says. “It’s a therapeutic procedure that is done with no scientific or clinical basis—there’s no basic way to check to see if the treatment even does what it claims.”

I found this very interesting because I have actually had this done to me. Over the Thanksgiving weekend my entire family minus my Dad took turns almost catching each others hair on fire.  The article states that no wax is drawn up into the tubes. This is completely false.  We actually had a contest to see who had the most ear wax in their tubes.  This does work and works very well. I agree that you have to be careful when doing it.  We used a piece of tin foil over the candle to prevent wax from dripping and it worked perfect.

2009 Fitness Goals PDF Print E-mail

Its been awhile since I have written down my goals for a new year. In fact, I am not sure if I have ever done this.  Consider yourself lucky for being able to read this.

  1. Lose 20 pounds.
    •  I am currently sitting at 185. I think getting down to 165 would leave me looking like a lean mean fighting machine. I am getting married at the end of April and I want to look my best for my beautiful bride.
  2. Run a trail race.
    • I used to run 5k races but got tired of it pretty fast.  I am not a fast runner so it seems like I never would do very well. When I was a kid, I used to go running in the Badlands in North Dakota.  I was pretty good at feet placement and think I would be good at running trails. I managed to make it out twice last year and had a blast. The race that I am most interested in running is the Psycho WyCo run in Kansas City.
  3. Buy a road bike.
    • This one might have to wait because one of my personal goals is to get out of debt. Unless I can find a pretty decent affordable road bike, I may have to continue to use my GT i-drive for on and off road use.
  4. Get down to 10% body fat.
    • I am currently sitting at 14% I think.  I think if I can accomplish goal number 1, this goal will take care of itself.
  5. Get more people to read my blog.
    • This site is fairly new and I don't expect a lot of people to be stopping by. My goal for this year is to increase my readership so that I can really help people near and far.

P90X Review PDF Print E-mail
P90X Its been a few months since my fiancee and I tried P90x and I thought now would be a good time to do a brief review of it. We loved this program and the results that we saw from it. The only thing that we didn't like was the amount of time that it took. We are very busy people and for us we were hard pressed to find the time. We were either getting up at 5am or staying up until midnight to try and get it done. Each "session" takes over an hour with the warm up and cool downs included. It also requires the use of weights, bands, and/or a pull up bar. We have all three but to get the kind of results that I was looking for, I needed more that the 25 pound dumbbells that I have.  In my honest opinion, the yoga DVD was by far the best workout in the program. I would have never thought that simple movements and positions would exhaust me as much as it did.  Kenpo was pretty bad ass as well.

The programs were easy to follow and I loved the fact that Tony Horton and his crew would show us several different ways to do the same exercise. Tony is very motivating but sometimes I got tired of his arrogance. Lucky for me, the makers of P90x saw this coming and included a commentary "off" option. We used that quite often. Tony doesn't go overboard talking about himself, but he does throw a comment in a time or two. I guess if I looked half as good as he does at that age, I would be a little cocky as well.

Its definitely a great program and if done right and by the book, you will see great results from it.

What I am thankful for. PDF Print E-mail

2009I am sitting at my desk, listening to Christmas music on the Ipod and thinking about the past year. I have so much to be thankful this year.

I want to start by thanking two people that contributed greatly to my great year.  The first “person” never gave up on me even when times were tough. I know, now, that he was always there; sometimes beside me, sometimes carrying me, sometimes clearing the way for what lies ahead. He was always there and when I was ready, he accepted me back. He then gave me a great gift. He introduced me to someone that truly changed my life. She is my best friend and soon to be my wife.  I knew from the moment that I saw her that her and I were destined to be together forever. She is such an amazing person and I am so thankful to have her in my life. With her by my side, I feel like I can do anything.

I am thankful for my two daughters.  They are beautiful in so many different ways and each day with them is a blessing. I love being a father and cant imagine my life without my children.

I am thankful for my new family. They have taken me in like we have known each other for years.  I look up to and respect them all and can see where my fiancee gets her strong family values from.

I am thankful that distance has not taken away from my relationship with my family. Although we don’t get to talk as much as I would like, we have always managed to stay close throughout the years.

I am thankful that I still have a roof over my head and food on the table. In hard economic times like these, its easy to get yourself down amongst all the tragic news. I am grateful that I am still able to provide for my family. It may not be like I had envisioned, but we have never gone without… and we never will.

Thank you to everyone for helping to make 2008 a year that I will always remember. Now bring on 2009!
